Fraternal Twin Tables

Meet the twins:

Ok they are not identical. But they are fraternal if you will. Yes they have their own different personalities (and if you ask, one is 1/2” bigger than the other) but they are definitely related. I met one at a thrift store and the other on the facebook marketplace and nearly did a double take. Could they be brothers-from-another-mother separated at birth?!? Only one way to find out - get all 1990’s family portrait up in here and dress them alike:

I refinished both of them in a matching color pallet of forest green, rust red, and an inky blue-black. Each has a unique distressed design but the color coordination allows them to “speak the same language” as we like to say.

Both brothers have a hidden drawer. One has it in the front…

And the other on the side.

They each have a lower shelf for more storage…

And brass feet.

How can you deny the resemblance?! These near doppelgängers are distressed to impress and that worn finish will only get better with more use. I can easily picture them in a boys room or even better a vacation rental. Can you tell I have lake living on the brain by my Pendleton Wool inspired styling?

And can I just say I was never a lake person before I married Caleb? My family was split into two camps: mountains or beach. How did I NOT know you can have the best of both worlds with a flippin’ lake house!?!

That coat rack from QT Home Décor would be the perfect drop spot for wet towels when you come up from the dock. And the stainless steel construction means it would withstand heavy vacation rental use too. *Side Note* they also have an incredible selection of modern house numbers if you want to up your rental’s curb appeal too.

Brass Hanging Planters || 2018 Flip List Item No.5

If you've been following us for a while then you've probably heard me talk about my annual Furniture Flip Bucket List and for those of you who aren't in the loop - it's basically a declaration of what I'd like to accomplish each year.  Well my friends, this post is about crossing one of those items off this years list plus crossing a secret bucket list item off as well.

DSC04374.jpg

Ok so before we get to item No.5: Hanging Planter, we need to talk about a dresser - what else?

I recently saw this 5-drawer beauty on Facebook and picked it up with a very particular plan in mind - I wanted to straight up copy Chelsea's take on this piece:

Mid Century in 'Scholar Green'

January 2017

Ok.  So I admit that I have tried to copy her once before when I refinished this piece but struck out when I found the base was made with two different types of wood that I had to stain in order to match.  So when I brought this tallboy home, sanding the legs was like scratching a winning lotto ticket.

Finally, I could cross this secret bucket list item off: refinish a piece in a green and bare wood two-tone!

It's no secret that this green is our favorite.

Oh you dark and moody minx!  How your velvety emerald make my heart pitter-patter especially contrasted against those buttery naked tapered legs.

The five drawers make for lots of storage.

For styling, I deployed my favorite terra-cotta touch.

And, of course, the bucket list hanging planters!

These were surprisingly simple to make - start with some shallow brass bowls and two brass macramé hoops:

Supplies

Brass Bowls + Macramé Hoops

Flip the bowls upside down and brace the brass rings between to pieces of wood allowing the ring to rest on the bottom of the bowls.

Step No.1

Position Upside Down

Apply a bead of super glue epoxy that's rated for bonding metal and dries clear.

Step No.2

Apply Glue

Allow it to dry for the recommended length of time to ensure they will be able to bear weight when flipped right-side up.

Step No.3

Let Dry

Tie a string to the top of the ring then I fill with your favorite plant babies.

Four down, Three to go.  Catch up on the 2018 Furniture Flip Bucket List:

Color of the Year: Did Pantone Get It RIght?

Hi friends! Over the better part of the last decade I have found a tremendous amount of enjoyment from home decorating and styling. I desire to further my knowledge and soak in as much as I can both from a creative standpoint as well as the business. A large part of this business is understanding the ebb and flow of trends. Trends have always fascinated me even well before I stepped into the interior decorating world. How does an idea take off and become trendy? Who gets the ball rolling? Is it every day people or the rich and famous?

Then you have trend predictions which further add to my curiosity. One of the first trend predictions I started following a number of years ago was the Pantone color of the year. Didn't know there was such a thing? Here, take a look at some of their recent selections:

How do they pick the color year after year? I understand it from a marketing standpoint. With every declaration of which color will be leading the way that year you see the ripple effect right down to the most accessible and popular shopping destinations, such as Target, HomeGoods, Pottery Barn, etc. And then the celebrity designers partnering with those stores, (think Emily Henderson and Target), start styling their projects with the newest goodies available, showing everyone just how to incorporate the declared color of the year in a tasteful, manageable way.

This year the color turned out to be a twofer! They picked not just one, but two colors for 2016: Rose Quartz and Serenity. Here, they created this image of a faceless woman wearing a flowing cape to make the announcement:

Since this is an honest place I'll admit, I wasn't terribly excited by this combo. It brought me back to the days of when we had new boy-girl twins under our roof and everything was baby pink and baby blue. And really, other than a blush crocheted throw pillow at target I've barely noticed these colors make any strong statement this year.

Then something strange happened. I started noticing a different color breaking through the color-of-the-year combo - dark green!

If you're a big Fixer Upper fan you may recognize the photo above and the one below. They're just two examples from Joanna Gaines' strong use of dark green in their latest season which finished earlier this year. I noticed this color in just about every episode and I absolutely adored it.

And with the Fixer Upper cult following, I wondered if anyone else noticed as well. So I picked up a can of dark green, (Behr's 'Secluded Woods'), to refinish a mid-century dresser last Spring and it got scooped up within days. I had so many inquiries on that piece that once it sold, I had an immediate request for a nearly identical custom piece, (below on left).

I took the Summer mostly off from refinishing to focus on my family and some design jobs, but as soon as the kids went back to school last week I painted this beauty below in Ralph Lauren's 'Scholar Green', and it was taken within two days.

Is there a new color trending? Will it carry over to 2017? I sure hope so as we've got a little surprise to show you in a design job we're working on right now! But until we're ready to reveal, here are some more stunning examples of this moody color casually staking its claim:

Thank you all for stopping by!
