Brass Hanging Planters || 2018 Flip List Item No.5

If you've been following us for a while then you've probably heard me talk about my annual Furniture Flip Bucket List and for those of you who aren't in the loop - it's basically a declaration of what I'd like to accomplish each year.  Well my friends, this post is about crossing one of those items off this years list plus crossing a secret bucket list item off as well.

Ok so before we get to item No.5: Hanging Planter, we need to talk about a dresser - what else?

I recently saw this 5-drawer beauty on Facebook and picked it up with a very particular plan in mind - I wanted to straight up copy Chelsea's take on this piece:

Mid Century in 'Scholar Green'

January 2017

Ok.  So I admit that I have tried to copy her once before when I refinished this piece but struck out when I found the base was made with two different types of wood that I had to stain in order to match.  So when I brought this tallboy home, sanding the legs was like scratching a winning lotto ticket.

Finally, I could cross this secret bucket list item off: refinish a piece in a green and bare wood two-tone!

It's no secret that this green is our favorite.

Oh you dark and moody minx!  How your velvety emerald make my heart pitter-patter especially contrasted against those buttery naked tapered legs.

The five drawers make for lots of storage.

For styling, I deployed my favorite terra-cotta touch.

And, of course, the bucket list hanging planters!

These were surprisingly simple to make - start with some shallow brass bowls and two brass macramé hoops:

Supplies

Brass Bowls + Macramé Hoops

Flip the bowls upside down and brace the brass rings between to pieces of wood allowing the ring to rest on the bottom of the bowls.

Step No.1

Position Upside Down

Apply a bead of super glue epoxy that's rated for bonding metal and dries clear.

Step No.2

Apply Glue

Allow it to dry for the recommended length of time to ensure they will be able to bear weight when flipped right-side up.

Step No.3

Let Dry

Tie a string to the top of the ring then I fill with your favorite plant babies.

Stupid Late Hardware || 2018 Flip List Item No.4

A few months back, I had the privilege of working with a client on a custom order.

NY Bound Custom Order

November 2017

We had decided on these beautiful pulls but our timeline was tight so I put in a rush order.

But by some quirk in the system, the hardware ended up taking the scenic route through who-knows-where snail mail land and I had to go with an unconventional alternative to meet my clients deadline.

Stupid Hardware.  Why you gotta play me like that?

IMG_8469.JPG

I kid you not, as the shipping company was pulling away with my client’s precious dresser cargo... UPS pulled up and unceremoniously tossed my package of hardware at my feet then drove away.

Practically.

I could have returned them.  I really could.  I didn’t charge my client for them so it'd be my money I’d be getting back.

But they were so stupidly beautiful.

So I added the I-wanna-hate-you-but-I-love-you brass pulls to the 2018 Furniture Flip Bucket List and I waited for the next suitable piece...

And transformed it to this:

Alright you brass pulls. You really can slay.

The color is our favorite "Scholar Green" by Ralph Lauren.

I was trying to recreate this fresh look from Chelsea's hunter green flip circa last year...

Mid-Century in 'Scholar Green'

January 2017

My original plan was to strip the base down and leave it bare blonde wood just like Chelsea did.  But when I sanded it down, I found that the legs and front bar where two very different types of wood and there was no sanding out that reddish color.  So I leaned into it and stained the whole base in a cabernet.

Plus those red wood tones make the perfect compliment to styling with my terracotta collection (like I need an excuse - I’m certifiably obsessed).

As I am also with plants.  Plus, to mix things up, I used the Tapti rug by Mela Artisans as a wall tapestry.

Well hardware, I’m a little less mad at you, but maybe helping me sell this big beautiful behemoth will officially get you out of the doghouse. Email me about picking up in Leesburg or about your third-party shipping options.

Three down, Four to go.  Catch up on the 2018 Furniture Flip Bucket List:

Emerald + Gold Chairs

How many times have we seen office chairs like these?  Forgettable vinyl steelcase seats with laminate wood arm rests.  I myself saw these on craigslist a few weeks ago and kept on scrolling.

But somehow, on the back-most burner of my brain, an idea began to percolate.  I lazily kept my eye on the post while the idea brewed and just when a solid vision started forming... the craigslist post was gone.

Whomp Whomp

Had someone else seen what I had seen in these chairs??  Would I ever be able to bring my now piping-hot vision to life??  My FOMO kicked in and I started hangrily looking for a suitable substitute only to turn up a whole lotta nada.  Then a miracle occurred.  A few weeks later, the post reappeared on Craigslist!  The chairs had not sold - the post had only expired!  My project had not been poached.  I could I finally try out my hopefully genius (albeit simple) refinishing strategy:

Go for the Gold

Green and gold that is.  It's no secret Chelsea and I love how emerald and brass play off each other (see here and here to name a few ;).

When I first saw these chairs, my brain must have subconsciously flagged them as having all the right lines for a modern, glam pair of chairs.  Once it occurred to me that our favorite faux gold treatment would instantly elevate the look of these chairs, I had to get a piece of that action.

I was too impatient to wait for a sunny spring day to paint the frame so I tried spray painting on a misty morning.  The result ended up being a "beautiful blooper" as my mother would call it.  The moisture in the air didn't let the paint settle evenly which added a unique dimension to the patina.  If you want to recreate this effect (no matter the weather), I suggest intermittently using a spray bottle filled with water while the paint is still wet.

The laminate arm rests were a dead giveaway that these chairs were waiting area seats in a past life so needless to say - they had to go.  I affixed some brass nail heads to hide the old holes left from the screws.

I love how the shiny new finish on the chairs instantly have that emerald vinyl running in the same social circles as trendy high-end occasional chairs.  Such a simple trick to transform them from lackluster to luxe!
